Amrita Shakya

Analytical Therapist & Hypnotherapist
Member of the International Society of Applied Psychoanalysis

“Today, the direction of change in the analytical experience is less about learning to know or understand oneself than about the very experience of learning to be who one is, who one can become.”

Thomas Ogden

Presentation

We all carry emotional baggage that causes us suffering.

Often, we neither understand our everyday behavior nor the choices we make.

Figuring out on our own why we do what we do and why we continue to behave in a certain way can be difficult. Exploring this with a therapist helps us break free from patterns of behavior and live life to the fullest.

I offer a safe, confidential and non-judgmental space in either my Champaign, Illinois office or online (visual and telephone are both possible).

I welcome you in this journey of self-exploration and transformation.

My Background

After completing GCSE A-levels in Psychology in Kathmandu, Nepal, I majored in General Psychology at Knox College.

After looking to Clinical Psychology and Tibetan Buddhism, I trained in Psychoanalysis at the International Society of Applied Psychoanalysis. My practice of Psychoanalysis is informed by European contemporary post-Freudian theory. I am certified in Eye Movement Therapy and Eriksonian hypnosis and frequently employ these techniques as part of the process of therapy. As a member of the International Society of Applied Psychoanalysis, I undergo my own personal analysis and am supervised by the same society, since both personal analysis and supervision are important for sustained growth of an analytical therapist. My strength as an analytical therapist lies in my diverse background and exposure to different cultures and experience working with people around the world.

Sessions last 45-50 minutes either face to face or on the couch, weekly or biweekly, depending on individual case basis. Sessions can be conducted in English, German, Newari, Nepali and Hindi. Online sessions are also possible through WhatsApp. I charge $100 per session, but I offer limited sliding scale slots each year. I am not part of the American health care system so the payment is out of pocket and non-refundable. No-shows and late cancellations will still be billed.

Methods

Psychoanalysis, EMT, Eriksonian hypnosis

Psychoanalysis

Psychoanalysis or analytical therapy is a method of investigation or exploration of the unconscious using speech. The root of psychological suffering lies in unresolved childhood conflicts. The goal is to resolve these unresolved internal conflicts. In the process of healing through making the unconscious conscious and releasing repressed feelings and emotions, we come to understand ourselves better. This change in relationship with ourselves allows for a better relationship with others and the world in which we live.

What makes psychoanalysis/analytical therapy profound is that it does not primarily aim at curing or treating symptoms. Its exploration method goes to the root of the symptoms and, in the process, uproots the very cause of the symptoms. Analytical therapy does not use a standard framework that is generalized to all individuals but is a profound investigation that is individualized according to an individual’s history, case and needs.

Eye movement therapy (EMT)

Eye movement therapy is used for evacuation of emotional shocks or trauma stored in one’s system using eye movement. This helps process the stored trauma through neuro-emotional programming allowing it to be released immediately. EMT is very effective in deprogramming and integrating trauma so that its effects cease to affect perception, behavior and physiological health. Preliminary sessions are required before EMT.

Eriksonian hypnosis

Hypnosis led to the discovery of Psychoanalysis. Eriksonian hypnosis uses suggestive language such as stories, metaphors to induce a person into sleep-like state of hypnosis. Through hypnosis, the unconscious material can be accessed more easily so that an individual comes to find suitable solutions. Preliminary sessions are required before Eriksonian hypnosis.
